character

Gregor

Also called Scav, The Scav, or Scavenger

First appears in Chapter 2

GREGOR Scav. Itinerant trader. Survivor, in the least flattering sense of the word.

Occupation: Scavenger and acquirer of goods Base: None. Wherever the cart stopped last. Family: A wife and two children, who travel with him Known associates: Aris of Obissian Castle (client)

Gregor finds things. Some of them were lost, some abandoned, and some he prefers not to discuss. He works a slow circuit through Kraeta with his wife and two children, picking over the places other people have given up on, then calling on a short list of customers he trusts to pay and not ask where it came from. Aris is on that list. When the old scholar needs something acquired that can’t be requested through proper channels, it’s Gregor he sends for.

People who know him reach for the same comparison: a cockroach. It isn’t entirely an insult. Gregor is not brave. He startles easily, runs early, and has never once stayed to see how a fight turned out. But he is still here, in a kingdom that has buried better men by the thousand, and his family is still here with him. He is easy to scare and very hard to kill, and he has learned that the first quality is a large part of the second.

He never stays anywhere long. Whether that’s trade, habit, or something behind him is a question Gregor doesn’t answer.

It was Gregor who found the cave mouth beneath the gray boulder near the Digryph. He covered the entrance with sod and stone before he left, and he brought the story to Aris.
